Reading To Your Toddler

Reading to your toddler is one of the most enjoyable things you can do to with your child. It is fun, good bonding time and hugely beneficial to your child. It has a calming effect on the child.

Reading exposes the child to various different words and this improves the vocabulary of the child. The listening word starts to become the written word when he she enter preschool or kindergarten.

It establishes a routine. Like for example reading a couple of books before bed time Reading a story before morning tea time.

And what about the effect it has on the child’s imagination When you read a book to your child, the child imagines himself being a part of the story He can get lost in the book and this so good for him.

Reading helps develops your child’s listening skills. It increases his attention span. Might not happen after one book, might not even happen after 10 books But in due course you will see the attention span of your child increase hugely.

And here is the most important benefit of all reading to a child will encourage him or her to become a reader. It will increase their desire to read for themselves.

It is also important that you pick the right books to read to your toddler. Pick books that are meant for toddlers. Pick books from good authors award wining and good reviews.
Make reading a fun activity. Don’t force your child. When reading to your toddler, read for enjoyment don’t read with a goal of getting him to ready by himself. Don’t think too hard Some parents put their finger under each word as they read I am not sure if this is a good idea for a story book at a such young age. It can honestly drain the fun out of the activity and your toddler will lose interest. Just read Let your child enjoy the book and run wild with the story. Reading by himself, he or she will achieve in time.

Sometimes you can stop reading half way through and ask your child to guess what happens next. Allow him to explain in his own words let him imagine and try and come up with the next part of the story.

After reading a story, you can also give a couple of events in the story and ask him which one happened first. All this will develop his comprehension skills and you can gauge how well he understands the story. Don’t do these activities all the time Then it can become a boring and a chore to him.

Keep reading a fun activity. It is something your child should get excited about So you design how it should be done and how it can be done based on your child. Keep it simple and keep it fun.

Toddler Reading Lesson Plans

Mastering the skill of reading is an essential requirement in everyday life. So, I think you will agree with the opinion of many, that the earlier you master reading, the better. The number of parents/guardians teaching their toddlers how to read, is rapidly growing in today’s society.

Parents and caregivers alike, are not teaching their toddlers how to read in order to be trendy, but to give their child a brighter beginning for a successful future.

Giving your toddler lesson plans for reading promotes improvement in the brains’ neural synapses. The firing of the neural synapses grants him/her the ability to generate intellect.

Teaching your toddler how to read, also, dramatically decreases his/her chances of possessing a low self-esteem, which is a rapidly growing crisis in our youth.

When teaching your toddler how to read, keep this in mind; the delicate, growing brain of a toddler can be trained to read, but only to a certain extent. Mostly, the educated toddlers are familiar with their ABC’s, and whole words, but lack the ability to read smoothly or understand what they’re reading.

The plus side to this is that, as your toddler gets older, he/she has already started developing comprehension skills.

You should not be alarmed if your toddler doesn’t master reading at this stage in life. Reason being, neural connections in a toddlers brain are not adequately developed; rendering the child unable to comprehend the structure of a sentence, the formation of a word, or the meaning of a word.

However, there are some toddlers that are gifted with the ability to do all of this at an earlier stage in life.

When you begin the toddler lesson plans, go with the in-direct approach. This approach is highly recommended when teaching a toddler how to read. You dont want to intimidate your child, this will decrease self-esteem; a fundamental necessity when learning how to read.

Be sure to make your toddlers reading lessons enjoyable. You dont want to over-do-it or make your child feel forced in anyway. If your toddler is being fussy and unmanageable, he/she may be getting bored.

In my opinion, boredom is the minds worst enemy. If boredom occurs, you should find something else that he/she will interact with and continue toddler lesson plans later.

*Helpful Hint*- when creating lesson plans, you should have flexible learning techniques, arrange them by age or skill level for future lesson plans. 😉

As you know, you have to know the alphabet in order to read. So, grab some ABC books (not the catalogue. lol), bright-colored, illustrated or pop-ups, just something that will grab his/her attention. Flash cards are very resourceful; let your toddler hold the cards, this will reward him/her, resulting in a motivated mind, and a confidence boost! (for you and your child 🙂

A toddler’s capability to learn revolves around how he/she learns. In my opinion, the Monkey See Monkey Do technique is the easiest way for a toddler to learn.

Your little one sees and hears more than you know. Just imagine what your child would think if he/she walked into the kitchen and seen Mommy reading a book!

*(Denis Waitley) ” In everything your children will ever be, is who they watch, what they look at, what they read, what they hear and who they emulate as their mentors and celebrity role models”.

Consistency is also a popular technique used in toddler lesson plans. If your child is persistent on reading a certain book everyday, then by all means, read it!

When doing this, your child is using consistency to memorize the words, letters, and sounds. While reading, make sure you read slow, smooth and punctual. Point to the words as you read them to help your toddler identify and connect the sounds of a word to its written form.

If you are a busy parent, as most of us are, you may be pushed for time with the everyday hustle and bustle. While running your errands, be creative and help your child identify road signs, and even the labels on groceries.

Adding this back-up technique to your toddler’s lesson plan will ensure that he/she acquires a lesson for the time being.

Reading Comprehension Strategies That Work For Kids

Are you looking for ways to help your child improve reading comprehension? Here are 8 key reading strategies used by elementary school teachers nationwide for improving reading comprehension. You can support your childs learning by practicing these comprehension activities at home.

Encourage your child to:

-Ask questions about the text. Provide opportunities for them to research unanswered questions online or at the library.
-Make predictions about the text based on prior knowledge and by looking at the pictures. Make sure your child checks to see if his/her predictions were correct.
-Make connections: Does the book remind your child about something he/she has personally experienced or read about before?
-Compare and contrast characters in the book. Encourage your child to think beyond surface-level observations and compare the actions and motivations of different characters.
-Summarize what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. This is a key comprehension skill that will later allow your child to organize thoughts into paragraphs and essays. Children as young as preschool can practice this by drawing pictures of different parts of the story.
-Visualize what is happening in the story. Find descriptive words in the text to help your child make a mental picture. This can also become a drawing activity, if your child illustrates scenes from the story.
-Reread difficult passages to clarify ideas. Your child will need help learning to do this. You can model this by thinking aloud while reading to your child: That part was confusing for me. I should go back and read that again to help me understand.
-Think about how the text makes him/her feel: Did your child enjoy the story? Why or why not? If your child could rewrite the story, what would he/she done differently than the author? Why did the character behave a certain way? Would your child have done the same thing or made different choices? These are higher level, analytical questions that promote a deeper understanding of the story.

Good readers use these reading strategies without thinking about them, but young children who are just beginning to read need to be explicitly taught how to understand what they read. Use these strategies with your child for reading comprehension practice at home.
